About this video

Commuter railroads like MARC rail in Maryland are replacing 40 year-old diesel engines with new ones designed by Motive Power of Boise, Idaho. The MP36 locomotives run on low sulfur diesel and can cut hydrocarbon, particulate and nitrogen oxides emissions by as much as 70 percent. They're also as much as 30 percent more fuel efficient too. The engines, thanks to an electric auxilliary power unit, don't need to idle when in the station to keep the lights and brakes on, further reducing emissions.
