Study Links Drilling Wastewater, Earthquakes

A seismologist in Texas believes the disposal of water used for natural gas drilling may be the cause of several small earthquakes in the state.

Brian Stump of Dallas' Southern Methodist University, one of four authors on a Leading Edge journal study, says it's possible the saltwater used for hydrofracking and later pumped into the ground for disposal around the Dallas area caused temblors in 2008 and 2009.

Stump and colleagues analyzed records from 11 quakes.

They say they found the epicenter of one quake sits almost exactly atop a wastewater reinjection well, where about 9,000 barrels of saltwater a day were deposited.

But geophysicists warn the link is debatable and needs more research.

Good call on the waste water cause effect connection. It is yet another example of the long term effects of short term thinking that our future generations will have to deal with in the name of profit. That is...if profit doesn't kill off the planet before the next generations come to fruition.
