Ritter Signs RES Bill; Fuel Switching Advances
Colorado now has the Rocky Mountain region's highest renewable energy standard.
Governor Bill Ritter has signed into law a bill requiring that state utilities generate 30 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2020. The state's current RES is 20 percent.
The bill also encourages small-scale, home-based energy production. The Governor's Energy Office predicts it could result in as many as 100,000 homes with solar panels, small wind turbines or other energy-producing devices.
Meanwhile, another one of Ritter's energy priorities has cleared a major hurdle. A bill that encourages utilities to switch coal-burning power plants to natural gas and other cleaner fuels has passed the House and is now headed to a Senate committee.
