Nuclear Support Reaches All-Time High

Nuclear cooling towers.

A new poll shows support for nuclear power at its highest since Gallup first asked the question in 1994.

Sixty-two percent of the 1,014 Americans polled say they favor nuclear as one way to meet national electricity needs.

Republican support hit a high of seventy-four percent, up from seventy-one percent last year.  Meanwhile, Democratic support was just fifty-one percent, down from fifty-two percent in 2009.

The poll suggests growing support for expanded nuclear loan guarantees in Senate climate proposals, as well as the Energy Department's recent award of $8.3 billion in guarantees for two new reactors in Georgia.

The data, collected March 4-7 by Gallup, have a 4 percentage point margin of error.
