New Wind Energy Transmission Lines Could Come to Midwest

Transmission lines.

Several large Midwestern power companies want to get more wind energy to big cities, and are commissioning a study to help.

The group includes MidAmerican Energy in Des Moines, American Electric Power in Columbus, Ohio, Exelon Corporation in Chicago, and Northwestern Energy.

Quanta Technology of Raleigh, North Carolina, will look at transmission line development from the wind-swept Dakotas and Iowa to Chicago and east to Ohio.

Experts say the full energy potential of these regions will not be accessible without a new high-capacity transmission system.

The results are expected by January.

The power companies plan to share the study with the area grid operator, the Midwest Independent System Operator.
