Italy Oil Spill Considered Disastrous
Italian officials say an oil spill could cause an ecological disaster as the sludge hits the country's longest and most important river.
Officials in Milan say unknown amounts of gasoline and oil spilled into the Lambro River near Piacenza and has also reached the River Po.
It happened Tuesday and they believe the cause was likely sabotage at a former refinery turned oil depot.
The ANSA news agency estimates about 150-thousand gallons were spilled.
An environmental group says despite efforts to contain the slick, it has damaged wildlife, including several species of water birds.
Local authorities are requesting that a state of emergency be declared to receive additional governmental funds for the clean up project.
