Giant Solar Plant Planned for New Mexico

A subsidiary of oil giant Chevron plans to build what New Mexico officials call the largest solar plant in the nation.

Chevron Mining and Governor Bill Richardson said Tuesday the concentrating photovoltaic demonstration project would be in Santa Fe.

The 1-megawatt plant will be built on 20 acres of the company's molybdenum mine near Questa in the northern part of the state.

Technology used in the new plant will be more efficient with less material.

Unlike a concentrating solar thermal plant, it will use lenses to focus sunlight onto solar cells.
