EPA Near Decision on Nat Gas as 'Best Available' Technology

Natural Gas Drilling

The Environmental Protection Agency is close to deciding whether electric utilities must consider burning natural gas as a means of cutting greenhouse gases.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the agency is determining what counts as "best available control technology" as it finalizes emissions rules for power plants and other stationary emissions sources.  EPA is also looking at carbon capture and sequestration and energy efficiency measures.

The agency says it is developing the rules in response to a 2007 Supreme Court order, and because Congress has not passed an emissions bill.

Experts tell the Journal that if the agency endorses natural gas, companies planning gas-fired plants would have an advantage, while those with coal-burning plants in the works might be forced back to the drawing board.
