Calif. 'Green Transmission Line' Shelved

Los Angeles power officials have scrapped plans for an 85-mile "green transmission line" through the southeastern California desert.

The LA Department of Water and Power's $800 million project was designed to bring electricity from solar, geothermal, wind and nuclear plants to Los Angeles from the southeastern California deserts and Arizona.

But it ran into fierce opposition from environmental groups who were upset that it would run through wilderness preserves that are internationally recognized birding hot spots and home to bighorn sheep and chuckwallas.

The DWP is now focusing on developing renewable resources closer to existing power corridors.
