Baltic Sea Gas Pipeline Approved

Gazprom has been given the final go-ahead to build a 750-mile natural gas pipeline through the Baltic Sea to Germany, creating the first direct link to western Europe.

Finland environment officials gave their permission, despite earlier environmental concerns.  It was the last permit needed.

Some groups still worry that the heavy metals and other materials used in construction could damage the environment. The area is already littered with old mines from both World Wars.

The project is expected to cost $10 billion dollars and carry 1.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas a year.  It will be the biggest man-made object in the Baltic Sea.

It bypasses Ukraine, which reduces the risk of supply cuts that crippled parts of Europe last year.

Construction is set to begin in April, with gas shipments planned to start next year.
